Pierrefonds (Eure)
Near Compiègne is the village of Pierrefonds. This castle, which
dominates the town, was completely destroyed and rebuilt under the direction
of - who else - Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who seems to have done most of the
restoration/construction work in France in that era. A great place to stay
is the Hôtel des Étrangers, in the center of town facing the
château.
